THE
GUEST BEDROOM
About the space
This guest bedroom was the very first room in our home to get a DIY makeover, driven by necessity when our parents came to visit and I couldn’t face having them sleep on stained carpet. It became my first real renovation project and the space where I used my very first power tool, quietly kickstarting my DIY journey.
The original update was simple: fresh paint and thrifted furniture to make the room feel clean and welcoming. But over time, I found myself coming back to this space, slowly layering in more character as my confidence and skills grew. My favorite DIY is the custom closet, which came about after an HVAC mishap damaged the floors and doors. With almost no budget I used DIY hacks, clearance finds, and leftover materials to turn our poor little closet into a charming storage space with faux floral wallpaper and dark beadboard floors that now feel completely intentional.
Once the closet was finished, the rest of the room felt a little bare, so obviously things escalated. I added a faux grasscloth feature wall and layered in soft, floral details to bring warmth and whimsy. Now, this room isn’t just a place for guests to sleep, it’s one of the calmest and prettiest spaces in our home, and a reminder that creating a home takes time.

Design Details

Often overlooked, but oh so important.
Because it's the details that truly make the difference
The walls and ceiling were painted in the color smokey white by Behr. It’s a lovely soft white with pink undertones.
The bedroom door was finished using a DIY faux wood technique. See the full tutorial here (Coming Soon).
The hardware I chose for the door was a pretty black option with vintage curves.
The closet walls were painted in Smokey White by Bher to match the rest of the room, however the shelving was painted in the color Boston Legacy by Valspar, a rich dark brown to add contrast and depth to the closet.
The faux wallpaper effect inside the closet was achieved using stencils and an olive green paint from the oops section. See the full tutorial here (Coming Soon).
The custom closet doors were a DIY using inexpensive plywood. See the full tutorial here (Coming Soon).
They were painted in the color Brown Bark by Valspar.
The closet floor was created using individual panels of wooden beadboard that I stained in the color Walnut by Minwax and topped with a Satin Polyurethane.
The feature wall was DIY wall kit by The Color Shop. I chose the Grass Cloth Kit in the color Beach Cruiser – you can use code dawnofadaydream for 10% off. See the full tutorial here (coming soon).
Since my feature wall was a full of texture and color, I didn’t want my outlets to stand out like sore thumbs and your average white outlet would have done just that! So I purchased some $2 paintable outlet covers. These go right over the top of your existing outlets, no electrical work or fancy tools necessary. Once they’re installed you can paint right over the top of them so that they match your wall perfectly! So yes, my outlets look like grasscloth because details.
For the light switch in the guest bedroom I wanted to add something a little fancy and vintage look so I installed a brass metal switch cover. I really believe these little details go a long way towards making a room feel complete.
